Geriatric Workforce Enhancement Program (GWEP) The Pacific Islands Geriatric Workforce Enhancement Program (PI-GWEP) addresses the shortage of geriatrics-trained healthcare practitioners through active and committed academic-community partnerships in its service region. The PI-GWEP region is vast, covering 6 out of the 8 Hawaiian Islands as well as portions of the U.S. Affiliated Pacific Islands (i.e. Guam, Samoa, Yap and Palau). The PI-GWEP strives to bridge gaps in care for our kūpuna (older adults) by developing, implementing, and evaluating a comprehensive, collaborative, interdisciplinary, and culturally-relevant program of clinical training for a healthcare workforce that engages the patient, family, and caregivers into an age/dementia-friendly community. The PI-GWEP faculty members work with medical students, residents, fellows, along with other allied health fields (i.e. social work, public health, and nursing) to build a geriatric-capable medical workforce. The PI-GWEP also provides continuing education (ECHO and Grand Rounds) and collaborates with community partners to provide educational lectures and resources to local caregivers. The PI-GWEP is located at the Department of Geriatric Medicine, John A. Burns School of Medicine (JABSOM), University of Hawaiʻi (UH).
