Community Education & Outreach

Supporting Older Adults, Caregivers, and Communities

PI-GWEP works with community organizations, healthcare partners, caregivers, and local leaders to bring aging-related education, resources, and outreach activities directly into communities across Hawaiʻi. Through workshops, educational events, resource development, and community partnerships, these efforts help support healthy aging, caregiving, and community well-being.

Caregiver & Dementia Education

Supporting caregivers is a key component of community education efforts. In partnership with the Alzheimer's Association – Hawaiʻi Chapter, PI-GWEP provides educational programs, workshops, presentations, and community events focused on dementia, brain health, caregiving strategies, and available support services. Community-based activities, including Dementia Education Day programs and caregiver-focused educational events, create opportunities for individuals and families to learn, connect, and access resources that support caregiving and healthy aging.

Advance Care Planning & Community Resources

PI-GWEP collaborates with Kokua Mau to promote advance care planning and informed healthcare decision-making. Educational presentations, community discussions, and outreach activities encourage conversations about healthcare preferences, serious illness planning, and person-centered care. Community resource guides, caregiver handbooks, educational materials, and other tools are also developed and shared to help individuals and families access information, services, and support throughout the aging journey.

Indigenous & Culturally Responsive Programs

Through partnerships with the Indigenous Peoples' Consortium and Indigenous health leaders, PI-GWEP supports educational opportunities that explore aging, dementia, caregiving, and health equity through culturally grounded perspectives. Educational webinars and community programs help healthcare professionals, caregivers, and community members better understand the unique experiences, strengths, and needs of Indigenous communities. Community-based initiatives, including the Molokaʻi Native Hawaiian Kūpuna Dementia Education Day, bring education and resources directly into communities while creating opportunities for meaningful conversations around aging, memory, caregiving, and community well-being. Storytelling and educational resources, including Pomai & Papa materials, help support culturally responsive approaches to community education and healthy aging.

Community Partnerships & Outreach

PI-GWEP works with organizations including ALU LIKE, KULA, Catholic Charities Hawaiʻi, community health centers, and other local partners to expand access to aging-related education and resources throughout Hawaiʻi. Outreach activities include community presentations, conferences, educational events, and collaborative initiatives that strengthen connections between healthcare providers, caregivers, families, and community organizations. PI-GWEP extends its community outreach through conferences, educational forums, and collaborative events across Hawaiʻi. Participation in initiatives such as the Area Health Education Center (AHEC) Health Workforce Summit helps connect healthcare professionals, educators, community organizations, and caregivers while promoting conversations around healthy aging, workforce development, and community well-being.
