PI-GWEP supports clinical training experiences that prepare future healthcare professionals to care for older adults across a variety of healthcare and community settings. Through partnerships with community health centers, hospitals, long-term care providers, hospice organizations, and community-based programs throughout Hawaii, learners gain hands-on experience while working alongside professionals who serve diverse aging populations.
A key component of these efforts is the Training Through Older Adult and Rural (TTOUR) network, which supports trainee placements across clinical and community-based settings throughout Hawaii. TTOUR sites help expand training opportunities in rural, neighbor island, and medically underserved communities while increasing exposure to the healthcare needs of older adults across diverse care environments.

Fellowship & Primary Care Rotations
PI-GWEP partners with community health centers across Hawaii to support community-based geriatrics training experiences for Geriatric Medicine Fellows. Through collaborations with organizations such as Waianae Coast Comprehensive Health Center, Wahiawa Center for Community Health, and Kokua Kalihi Valley Comprehensive Family Services, fellows participate in primary care and geriatrics-focused clinical experiences that emphasize age-friendly care, chronic disease management, care coordination, and interdisciplinary practice. These partnerships help strengthen the geriatrics workforce while expanding access to specialized care and training opportunities within community-based settings serving older adults.
PI-GWEP supports clinical training experiences that expose medical students to the unique opportunities and challenges associated with caring for older adults in rural, underserved, and community-based settings. Through rotations across Hawaii, students gain experience in geriatrics, long-term care, hospice services, and age-friendly approaches to care delivery. Neighbor island training experiences have included placements on Kauaʻi at sites such as Kauaʻi Medical Clinic, Garden Isle Nursing Home, and Kauaʻi Hospice. These experiences provide opportunities to learn from interdisciplinary teams while gaining a deeper understanding of healthcare delivery and aging-related care outside urban settings.
In partnership with the University of Hawaiʻi Thompson School of Social Work & Public Health, PI-GWEP supports gerontology-focused practicum experiences that prepare future social workers to serve older adults, caregivers, and families across clinical and community settings. Practicum experiences emphasize care coordination, caregiver support, community resource navigation, and interdisciplinary collaboration. Students engage with healthcare providers, community organizations, and aging services programs while developing the skills needed to address the social, behavioral, and healthcare needs of older adults. Recent practicum experiences have included community-based aging services, resource development, Age-Friendly Health Systems activities, educational initiatives, and interdisciplinary geriatrics training opportunities. Students may also participate in PI-GWEP programs such as the QUMG Geriatrics Telehealth Consult Clinic and other learning experiences that support collaborative, person-centered care for older adults.
